World Day Against Child Labour, observed today, June 12, 2025, serves as a sobering reminder of the millions of children who are denied their childhoods, their educations, and their futures. These kids are compelled to labor in dangerous jobs and aren't allowed to play, learn, or enjoy the small pleasures that characterize a healthy childhood. The theme for this year, "Universal Social Justice: Ending Child Labour for Good," emphasizes the basic injustice at the core of the problem and advocates for all-encompassing solutions that deal with its underlying causes.

No Child Labour

Child labor is a structural issue that is intricately linked to social vulnerability, poverty, inequality, and lack of access to education. It is not merely a personal tragedy. Families that are struggling financially may feel pressured to send their kids to work in order to augment their meager wages, as is the case in many parts of the world, including Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that we have made progress in the fight against child labor over the years, far too many children are still forced into exploitative jobs, such as domestic slavery, agricultural labor, clothing factories, and other dangerous jobs.

The "Universal Social Justice" theme highlights the close connection between attaining greater social justice for all and putting an end to child labor. This implies:

Strengthening Social Protection Systems: Vulnerable families can benefit greatly from strong social safety nets, such as cash transfers, unemployment insurance, and reasonably priced healthcare, which can lessen their reliance on child labor as a coping strategy.

Ensuring All Children Receive High-Quality Education: Education is a potent instrument for ending the cycle of child labor and poverty. Children who have universal access to high-quality, free education are better equipped with knowledge and skills, which prevents exploitation and opens doors to better prospects.

Encouraging Decent Work for Adults: Parents and other caregivers are less likely to require their children to work when they have access to steady jobs, safe working conditions, and fair remuneration. It is essential to make investments in adult employment and skill development.

Enforcing Laws and Strengthening Inspections: To ensure that those who engage in child labor are held accountable, governments must pass legislation prohibiting it and police it strictly. Finding and rescuing juvenile laborers requires efficient labor inspections.

Increasing Awareness and Shifting Attitudes: Everyone may contribute to the fight against cultural practices that might unintentionally support child labor. It is essential to spread knowledge about the negative effects of child labor and to encourage a society that respects children's rights.

In order to eradicate child labor, we in Sri Lanka must keep bolstering our national policies and initiatives. This entails bolstering our labor inspection systems, improving our social security programs, and guaranteeing that all children, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to high-quality education. Additionally important are community-based programs that empower families and increase awareness at the local level.

Eliminating child labor is an investment in our future as well as a moral obligation. Since children are our most valuable resource, we are laying the foundation for a more fair, just, and prosperous society for all by protecting their right to an unexploited childhood.

On this 2025 World Day Against Child Labor, let's renew our commitment to the mission of "Ending Child Labour for Good." Together, governments, corporations, communities, civil society organizations, and individuals can build a world where all children can attend to school, enjoy childhood, and realize their full potential. Now is the moment for resolute action. It is necessary for universal social fairness. Our kids are deserving.
